Portugal and Spain close borders at 11 pm; road freight transport is an exception
Portugal
More measures on the way by Executive branch to combat the spread of COVID-19: starting at 11 pm on Monday (midnight in Spain), the borders between Portugal and Spain are closed, with the exception of nine points, the which will allow the passage of goods and travel in a professional context. This suspension will remain in effect for 30 days, and this period may be extended in time.

Suspension of borders covers air, rail and river connections
The revelation of the closing of borders with neighboring Spain was made by the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, following the holding of a meeting (carried out by video conference) with the Spanish counterpart. Decision making is the most logical outcome, taking into account that the government official had recently pointed out the need to implement a more assertive and tighter control of entrances in Portuguese territory (where today there are 331 cases of infection and a mortal victim).

As a result of this decision, only nine crossing points will be opened, which will make the only road communication with Spain, in the field of road freight transport, essential to supply, for example, large areas of hypermarkets, vital to the integrity of the chain logistics that allows the continuous supply of essential goods. Eduardo Cabrita also announced that all flights between the two countries, as well as rail and river connections, are also suspended.

The European continent is already the central focus of the spread of the new coronavirus, and China - the country from which the virus started - is now in a situation of reversing the curve. Countries like South Korea and Japan also claim to have the outbreak fully under control.
